Time in the Boat and a Lifetime of Memories

A career in the outdoors has given me the chance to bring a number of guests along with me to explore some of the fantastic fishing opportunities in Saskatchewan, a destination I know I can count on to make great memories.  Sometimes my guests were seasoned pros and sometimes they were first-timers to the province. All want to come back.

A few years ago, I hosted two contest winners on a fly-in trip to fish for northern pike at Wollaston Lake Lodge.  We flew into a remote runway then made our way along a wilderness road to our angling oasis.  The lodge was beautiful with fantastic dining and accommodations   Ì¶  all of the comforts of home topped off with a view that spanned many miles of appetizing water and shoreline.

Each morning started with breakfast in the dining room overlooking the sparkling lake, while our guide readied our boat and equipment for the day.   Next, it was time to suit up and head out to find what we were here for.

There are opportunities to fish for lake trout, grayling, and walleye out of this camp, but we spent the week chasing giant pike.  The fishing was amazing and everyone caught a lot of great fish.  We were lucky enough to get some monsters on a top-water bite that we didn’t want to end.  Our arms were tired when we had to turn the boats back to camp that day.  By week’s end, we had multiple pike in the upper 40-inch range and an extraordinary number of fish over 42 inches.  It was definitely world-class angling.

This fantastic fishing wasn’t the only thing that was good for the soul. When it was time for a shore lunch somewhere out of the sun and wind, our guide handled it all, cooking our delicious catch over a wood fire. To top that off, after our long days on the water, we would come back to the lodge for a superb dining experience, as we watched the blue fade to red in the evening sky.  Each day, we ate until we couldn’t eat any more.

On this trip, we were lucky enough to witness an awesome show of the northern lights that seemed to cap off a perfect stay.  The summer days are long in the north, but, if you’ve got it in you, I recommend staying up to witness the night sky come to life. It is a true spectacle.

In my job, it’s fun to be a part of a process that creates memories for a lifetime.  Whether you are looking for a chance to reward customers and employees or want to work on team building with your crew, fishing for a week in Saskatchewan is a week never forgotten.

Many outfitters offer different experiences to meet the needs of your group. Most camps will provide a guided experience and even rental gear so you and your guests just need to show up and fish.  They will take you to the right places with the right gear at the right time to give both seasoned pros and beginners the best experience possible.
