The northern hamlet of Patuanak is located 92km N of Beauval at the end of Hwy 918. The community, which derives its name from the Cree term 'wapaciwanahk' meaning 'where the white water is', lies on the shore of the Shagwenaw Lake close to the Shagenaw Repids.
