Which National Historic Site was designated the headquarters of the North West Mounted Police in 1878?

A) Batoche National Historic Site

B) Fort Battleford National Historic Site

C) Motherwell Homestead National Historic Site

D) Fort Walsh National Historic Site

Answer: D) Fort Walsh served as the headquarters for the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) from 1878-1882. All NWMP communication went through Fort Walsh, and new recruits received their basic training there.

From 1942–1968, Fort Walsh was used as Remount Ranch, where the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) raised the large black horses that are an integral part of the RCMP’s internationally recognized image. Fort Walsh horses were also used in the RCMP Musical Ride. Many of the horses in the Musical Ride today can trace their ancestry to horses raised at Fort Walsh.
