Due to high water levels of the Quill Lakes and the flooding of the access road; the main observation towers and trails are not accessible at this time.

The Wadena Wildlife Wetlands are part of the Quill Lakes International Bird Area and the Western Hemispheric Shorebird Reserve (designated in 1994). This area is an important staging site for over 800,000 shorebirds and waterfowl annually. It supports a breeding colony of white pelicans, Canada's largest population of the endangered piping plover and many other birds including coots, American avocets, short-eared owls, sedge wrens, marbled godwits, willets and black crowned night herons.

The wetlands feature seven trails that total 4.9 km. The interpretive trails travel along the shores of the Wadena Wetlands, Jesmer Marsh, Little Quill Lake and Milligan Creek Marsh. Two large viewing towers and several observation platforms offer outstanding birdwatching opportunities with the optimum viewing times being May/June and August/September/October.

A feeding station is operational between mid-August to September 30.. A canoe launch, washrooms, picnic sites and boardwalks are open from spring through fall. Due to recent higher water levels, visitors are advised to check with the Wadena Town Office before visiting the area.
