Old Wives Lake is designated a Migratory Bird Sanctuary, and is part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network. An estimated 500,000 shorebirds use Old Wives Lake as a stopping point while on their migration S to South America from the Arctic breeding grounds. The area is significant both historically and environmentally.
