You step out onto your front porch, sit in your lawn chair and marvel at the beautiful view of the lake and the surrounding area. As you watch, cowboy hats appear over the ridge of the hill as horses with happy riders approach you for a warm welcome. That evening as you enjoy the hearty, home-cooked meal, you hear about the experiences of the day in laughter-filled stories and realize that you will soon be part of these adventures. After supper, you and your new friends wander down to the saloon and enjoy games of foosball, pool and darts. As you fall asleep to the sounds of frogs and crickets, you wonder, with anticipation, what tomorrow will bring.....Plan your stay around these exciting activities:
Season Opening: May 20, 2017
First week of the season:
Guests will get real hands-on experience with spring chores. Help bring calves into the world, take daily horseback trips to the pastures to check the herd, treat or ear tag newborns. Check and mend fences and assist with preparing the cattle facilities for their upcoming branding.
Round-Up and Branding the Offspring: June 1-10, 2017
One of the most popular times at the ranch is early June, when the cattle are rounded up for an old-time authentic branding. Guests will have the chance to learn how to rope and to participate in the hard work of cowboys. Guests should plan to visit for at least 10 days to become acquainted with the operation and their horse before branding day.
Fall Round-Up Week: October 7 – October 14, 2017
The last week of the season, cattle have to be rounded up on horseback and driven from the summer pastures to the headquarters of the ranch. The cattle will be counted, checked, vaccinated and moved back out into the same or a different pasture. This is a great adventure for guests who love to ride and want to learn skills around handling and driving cattle.
Located in the river hills of Lake Diefenbaker, La Reata is an authentic working cattle and guest ranch.
