Yukigassen Invades Saskatoon

From January 29-30, 2011, the sport of Yukigassen (the Japanese word for "Snow Battle") made its first appearance on North American soil in Saskatoon.

Developed over 20 years ago in Japan, these organized snowball fights are now taking the world by storm! In a nutshell, Yukigassen is dodgeball meets capture the flag with snowballs, but it also comes with a very developed set of rules and regulations, which makes this sport extremely competitive.

The game is played on a snowy court 40 meters long by 10 meters wide. Two teams of 7 players attempt to win the match by eliminating the other team with snowballs or capturing their flag. The snowballs are all made with a press, so they are all regulation size.

Tourism Saskatchewan sent a team to the historical event. They named themselves the Super Happy Snow Fighters. Check out the video below to see how they did. Click here to learn more about Yukigassen.
