Fishing Competitions: big fish, big money

Fresh, open waters, breathtaking scenery and plentiful stocks make for unforgettable fishing experiences, the kind of experiences for which Saskatchewan is world-famous. And you can liven up your Saskatchewan angling experience even more by getting in on fishing derbies or competitions.

It's a big one!Nipawin is host to many competitions, including the Great Northern Pike Festival. For over 30 years, the festival has been attracting anglers from across North America to beautiful Tobin Lake, all hoping to catch one of the 40 tagged northern pike with a total prize pool of over $107,000. The 2008 festival begins on June 15 and runs until September 30.

The North Saskatchewan River section of Tobin Lake plays host to the Saskatchewan Premier’s Walleye Cup on August 8-9, 2008. The walleye is Saskatchewan’s provincial fish, and this tournament is one of the largest walleye events in Canada. The Walleye Cup features over $25,000 in prizes, and is a two day, live release tournament, with proceeds going to the preservation of the lake resources and development of the lake facilities.

Here are just a few of the other fishing events scheduled for this summer and fall:

Kyle Annual Walleye Tournament - July 19-20, 2008

Codette Lake Walleye Cup – July 25-27, 2008

Qu'Appelle Valley Walleye Cup International Fishing Tournament – August 30-31, 2008
