Yorkton’s Dream of a Skateboard Park will Soon Become a Reality
It was recently announced that the City of Yorkton was named one of the winners of the 2011 Aviva Community Fund Challenge, which comes with a prize of $150,000! These funds, along with city and community grants, will help bring to fruition this community’s dream of creating a park for skateboarding, biking, and walking.
Following their Aviva Community Fund Challenge win, the City of Yorkton agreed to match those funds with another $150,000, and the Community Initiatives Fund granted the group another $50,000 to put towards this project. The City plans to complete the construction of the skateboard park by fall of 2012.
This money will not only fund a new skateboard park but it will also be a significant contributing factor to Yorkton’s new Brodie Avenue Redevelopment Project. This project will rejuvenate an area of Yorkton by rebuilding an entire street to a green space, which will consist of a catch basin and park area that will protect future loss of property due to flooding.
This new Skateboard Park will have many positive impacts, including:
• An opportunity/attraction for youth to participate in a no cost, healthy lifestyle activity, creating a place for families and youth to gather and socialize.
