German-Russian Cultural Festival
June 12-15, 2008
The 2008 German-Russian Cultural Festival not only celebrates this unique and colourful cultural combination, but it also commemorates the 100th anniversary of settlement in the Leader area. Great food and fellowship will be interspersed with interesting presentations, relating to a wide variety of cultural issues including language, cultural experiences and history.
This year's theme is "Focus on Writing" - history, genealogy, culture, and experiences. Organizers are pleased to present a Writer's Workshop featuring writers like Ron Vossler (East Grand Forks, MN), Sharon Chmielarz (Minneapolis, MN), Jacqueline Baker (BC), Gabriele Goldstone (Winnipeg, MB), and William Wardill (Eatonia, SK).
Things get started on Thursday, June 12 with registration, presentations and a free 100th anniversary picnic in the park. On Saturday, June 14, the day begins with a small town parade. After the parade, the Leader Lions Club will construct a sod house under the direction of master sod house builder, Mike Johner from Unity, SK.
The evening banquet is an authenic German-Russian feast, featuring homemade sausage, cabbage rolls, sauerkraut, pork ribs, potato salad, and smoked pork hocks. Sunday’s events include a non-denominational church service at Blumenfeld Church Historical Site and a performance by the German Harmonie Club Choir from Medicine Hat.
Bus tours to nearby areas of interest will also be available, and can be arranged at time of registration.
