Close your eyes. Imagine yourself stepping onto a piece of land that is visually stunning, with its open space, warm sun, coulees and vast bright blue lake that is located steps from your cabin.
Located in the river hills of Lake Diefenbaker, La Reata is an authentic working cattle and guest ranch. Visitors stay in comfortable western-style cabins, each equipped with a private bathroom. All meals and non-alcoholic beverages are provided with your stay. The main activity is horseback riding on well-trained quarter horses that roam freely on the large property.
Guests may also engage in hiking, bird watching, swimming, boating, fishing and other water sport activities. Evenings are spent playing games in the saloon, telling stories around the campfire or relaxing in the hot tub.
Plan your stay around these exciting activities:
Season Opening: May 19, 2014
First week of the season:
Guests will get real hands on experience with spring chores. Help as calves come to life, take daily horseback trips to the pastures to check the herd, treat or ear tag newborns, help check and mend fences and assist with preparing the cattle facilities for their upcoming branding.
Branding the Offspring: May 29 – June 7, 2014
One of the most popular times at the ranch is early June, when the cattle are rounded up for an old-time authentic branding. Guests will have the chance to learn how to rope and to participate in the hard work of cowboys. Guests should plan to visit for at least 10 days to become acquainted with the operation and their horse before branding day.
Round Up Week: October 4 – October 11, 2014
The last week of the season, cattle have to be rounded up on horseback and driven from the summer pastures to the headquarters of the ranch. The cattle will be counted, checked, vaccinated and moved back out into the same or a different pasture. This is a great adventure for guests who love to ride and want to learn skills around handling and driving cattle.
