Embrace the Winter with a Weekend Getaway in Regina
It’s happening again: Saskatchewan winter. Snow is falling, windshields are frosting and temperatures are plunging well below the OBSI (Outdoor Board Shorts Index).
Before you hit the ‘buy’ button on tickets to Hawaii in a blind panic, take a moment and consider a weekend getaway closer to home. Drop the kids off with family, put your phones away and take a well-earned Regina weekend for yourselves.
Book a suite at the Hotel Saskatchewan, Autograph Collection overlooking downtown’s Victoria Park. Relax in the comfortable Circa 27 Lounge and enjoy an appetizer or a Prohibition Tea (hint: it’s not really tea). Then button up your jackets and head across the street to the Rink @ City Square. Free skate rentals are available on site.
After your skate, get cleaned up and stroll over to Avenue Restaurant. Deemed one of Canada’s Best New Restaurants of 2019, Avenue makes a killer cocktail. If you feel like hearing live music or finding a club to wear out your dance shoes, the nearby Warehouse District is a two-minute drive away.
Next morning, take it slow. Order room service, or throw on a comfy sweater and take a short drive to Skye Café and Bistro for Sunday brunch (try the chilaquiles with avocado or the crab cake with citrus hollandaise). Weather permitting, you can stroll through adjoining Wascana Park. If conditions are right, feathery white hoar frost will be decorating the trees and bushes.
Finish your walk with a mug of hot chocolate or a Caramel Bean Espresso at the nearby Naked Bean Espresso Bar. In the evening, catch a live performance at Globe Theatre. Check the show schedule in advance and make sure to book your tickets.
After the show, wander to the nearby Casino Regina only a few blocks away. Housed in the historic Union Station, the casino has table games, slot machines and live entertainment at the Casino Show Lounge.
Finish your evening with a glass of wine back at the hotel. Ask the server about the all-Canadian wine list. We leave the rest of the evening to you.
