SaskPower Windscape Kite Festival: The Ultimate Saskatchewan Festival Experience

Every year for one weekend in June, an empty field on the outskirts of Swift Current transforms into a small, colourful city for the SaskPower Windscape Kite Festival. A group of dedicated volunteers display their Saskatchewan pride and love of kites by turning the festival grounds into a free, two-day event. People of all ages and faces are invited to take in the spectacle of kites dancing and soaring in the skies. Family-friendly activities, including kitemaking workshops and a straw bale maze, round out the event to make it an enjoyable all-day affair.

A kite festival on the prairies isn’t as common as one might think even though the wide-open spaces are known to get a bit gusty. As it turns out, southern Saskatchewan is a perfect place to stage a festival dedicated to the sport of kite flying. National and international kiting and kitemaking stars arrive every year to show off their creations and have a great time at an event where they’re welcomed and treated like celebrities. Engaging with the local community, demonstrating their craft and teaching others how to make their own kites are part of what makes the Windscape Kite Festival so singular and rewarding for everyone involved.

There is something about attending an event in Saskatchewan that makes it a unique and special experience. It’s a place where locals are so proud of their home that they step up to welcome guests and make sure that they have a great time. That sense of pride may be why Saskatchewan has the highest rate of volunteerism in the country.

The festival runs from June 24-25. For those travelling to Swift Current for the festival, there are great Stay & Play packages available through local partner hotels.
