Calories Restaurant Focuses on Quality Food and Service

Calories restaurant in Saskatoon hits the spot for everyone who comes through its door. With a fresh, creative, international menu, decadent desserts and an extensive wine list, Calories can satisfy almost any craving.

Calories RestaurantIt all began nearly 20 years ago when owners Janis and Remi Cousyn met on a train in Europe. Remi was from the tiny village of Villeneuve Loubet, France and Janis grew up in Saskatoon but left home at an early age to train in ballet. Janis was on hiatus from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and traveling through Europe when she asked Remi for directions. The rest, as they say, is history.

Remi had trained with the top chefs in France. His dream was to own a restaurant. Janis had worked at Calories, at the time owned by Janet Palmer. The two soon returned to Canada – to Montreal, then Whistler, and ultimately to co-ownership of Calories in Saskatoon. In 2000, Janis and Remi took sole ownership of Calories.

Calories RestaurantThey renovated and introduced a prix fixe menu, which is a complete meal of several courses, sometimes with choices permitted, offered at a fixed price. They focused on local and organic fare for their menu before it was popular to do so. Since then, Calories has pushed the envelope of its patrons’ taste buds and taken pride in quality food and top-notch service.

Most recently Calories was recognized by Western Living magazine in their October 2008 issue. The magazine named them Restaurateurs of the Year in their national “Top 40 Foodies Under Forty” awards – a very exclusive honour.

Janis and Remi plan to continue indulging their passion for food when they open their second business, Souleio Foods Inc. Souleio, meaning sun in Provençale language, represents life's bounty. Souleio will endeavour to deliver on the true meaning of the word "organic" through the food they serve at their bakery and deli, and sell at their gourmet foods grocery.

Calories restaurant is located at 721 Broadway Avenue in Saskatoon, and Souleio will open at 3rd Ave South in Saskatoon in spring/summer 2009.
