From the July 6, 1948 edition of the Regina Leader Post: "North Portal, SK, and Portal, ND are setting an example that, if copied on a world scale, would guarantee peace better than any method yet tried." Today, North Portal still carries on the tradition of international cooperation with a shared fire department, church and golf course. In fact, the Gateway Cities Golf Course is the only place where you can tee off in Canada and putt in the United States.​
