The Northern Settlement of Uranium City is located on the northern shore of Lake Athabasca. It is 48 km south of the Saskatchewan / Northwest Territories border and 724 km northwest of Prince Albert.

Uranium ore was discovered in the northern part of the province in the late 1930s, but with the onset of the Second World War the Canadian government imposed a ban on private exploration for the mineral and created Eldorado Mining and Refining Ltd. to control all uranium-related exploration activities. The lifting of the ban after the war sparked a rush to the Athabasca area and the need for a convenient service centre to service all the growing mines resulted. Construction of the community started in 1952 and its history has followed the ups and downs of the single-industry towns in Canada.
