    Stop at the Coronach Visitor Centre on Centre Street for tourist information and to learn of the history of Coronach and area including the rich coal history and the history of the Big Muddy Badlands. The Centre is the starting point for self-drive, pre-booked Big Muddy Tours.

    With the aid of a certified local tour guide, Big Muddy Tours let you explore the hills and the history resting in the scenic Big Muddy Badlands. Relive the history of cattle rustlers and horse thieves dodging the law on both sides of the border as you look out of the cave where famous outlaws and their men hid. See sacred Indigenous sites including the effigies and ceremonial circle. Other stops along the tour may include Castle Butte, Big Beaver Nature Centre and Paisley Brook Schoolhouse. Pre-booking is required as most of these sites are on private property. Full-day, half-day and a new highlights tour are available led by nationally certified local tour guides. Tour participants must have their own vehicle.

    Big Muddy Badlands Full-Day Tour

    Coronach, Big Muddy Badlands

    Big Muddy Badlands Full-Day Tour departs the Coronach Visitor Centre at 9:30 a.m., winding through the Big Muddy Badlands spectacular scenery to Castle Butte, then on to Big Beaver. Your tour guide will join you in your vehicle and direct the trip. E​xplore the Big Muddy Nature Centre and Museum. Lunch (supplied by yourself or pre-ordered from the Rustic Tavern​ in Coronach) is at the Heritage School House in Big Beaver. After lunch, your tour guide will direct you to the outlaw caves! Discover why the Big Muddy Valley was known as Station #1 on Butch Cassidy’s Outlaw Trail. The caves were once used as hideouts for famous outlaws, such as, Sam Kelly and Dutch Henry. The day's adventures wind down with stops at sacred Indigenous sites including two effigies and a ceremonial circle.​​

The 4-hour tour departs from the Coronach Visitor Centre on Mondays and Sundays at 12:30 p.m.​​
