Chocolate Peak
1.6 km NW of Eastend.
Located in Eastend, Chocolate Peak was originally known as Wedding Cake Hill with a large deposit of white mud clay at its base. During the 1930s and 1940s, white mud clay was a valuable pottery clay used in making many things including bricks. In 1930, an industrious miner thought it would be easier to mine the clay if he burned away the coal seam on top. Instead of burning for just a few days, the coal continued to burn for years turning the white clay to a chocolate brown colour. Chocolate Peak is located on private land and access requires permission from owner. Visitors can park along the road near the historical marker, and enjoy the vista overlooking the peak. Visitors are not allowed during wet and/or inclement weather.
